Balmain is a peninsula of narrow one-way streets, terraces with sandstone steps up from the footpath, and a main road that does not tolerate a parked truck. The plan for where the truck goes is made days before the move, not on it.

- Street access. Balmain's one-way streets are narrow, frequently parked out on both sides, and there is often no legal stop within sight of the address.

- Two and three-bedroom terraces and semis, often with a converted attic and a small courtyard. Half to full-day work.
- Sandstone steps and staircases
- Steps up from the footpath, then a narrow internal staircase with a turn. Both are measured against the larger pieces before the day.
- Parking permits
- Inner West Council issues temporary parking permits for removals, which you arrange as the resident or owner. We will tell you whether your street warrants one.
- Darling Street
- Congested from mid-morning and unforgiving of a stopped truck. Early starts are worth the alarm clock on any Balmain job.
Sixty metres of carry is an hour of your money.
If the truck cannot stop near the house, everything is carried further — and on an hourly job that distance is money. In Balmain the difference between a legal stop outside and one around the corner is regularly an hour or more.

02 Do you organise the council permit?
No, Inner West Council will only issue one to the resident or owner. We will tell you whether your street warrants it and how to apply, and we plan the truck position either way.
03 Will a large lounge come down our staircase?
Send the dimensions and a photograph of the turn. Terrace staircases here are narrow with a tight landing, and we would far rather answer that a fortnight out than on the day.
