Sydney to Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra or further — interstate removals work differently from a local move in ways that catch people out if nobody explains them upfront. Here is what actually happens between your old address and your new one.

How interstate quotes are usually priced

Local moves are priced by the hour. Interstate moves are usually priced by volume — cubic metres of belongings — plus distance, because your goods are travelling on a truck that is also carrying other people's belongings on the same route, in most cases. A one-bedroom unit might run to $2,000–$3,500 Sydney to Melbourne; a three-bedroom house is commonly $5,000–$9,000, though the range depends heavily on volume, access and how much of the truck you fill.

Dedicated truck vs. backloading

This is the single biggest decision in an interstate move. A dedicated truck goes directly from your old address to your new one, carrying only your belongings — faster and more predictable, at a higher price. A backload shares the truck with other customers' goods along the same general route, which is cheaper but means your things may sit in a depot for a few days before or after the drive while the truck fills, and delivery windows are wider rather than fixed.

Neither is wrong — a backload is a genuinely good option if your dates are flexible and you want to save money. It is the wrong option if you need your belongings on an exact day, because a dedicated truck is what you are actually paying for.

Timing: how long it actually takes

• Sydney to Melbourne: roughly 1–2 days transit on a dedicated truck.
• Sydney to Brisbane: roughly 1–2 days transit.
• Sydney to Canberra: often same-day or next-day given the shorter distance.
• Sydney to Perth or Darwin: 5–7 days is common given the distance, and backloads can add a week or more either side.

Build in a buffer. Book accommodation for the first night or two at the new end rather than assuming the truck arrives exactly on schedule — road conditions, other stops on a backload, and depot handling all add variability that a local move never has.

Insurance matters more here, not less

A dumped drawer during a local move is a bad afternoon. A damaged sofa on a truck that is two states away is a much harder problem to resolve. Confirm goods-in-transit or transit insurance specifically for the interstate leg, not just public liability, and ask what the claims process looks like if something arrives damaged.

What to pack yourself for an interstate move

However good the removalist, plan for your belongings to be inaccessible for several days. Pack a bag exactly as you would for a short trip — medication, chargers, a change of clothes, important documents, and anything irreplaceable — and keep it with you rather than on the truck.
